More about this Park

Rwenzori Mountains National Park, gazetted in 1991, protects the eastern slopes and glacial peaks of this majestic mountain range. Unlike volcanic mountains, the Rwenzoris are block mountains, pushed upwards through tectonic activity. Their unique altitudinal zones support an astonishing array of plant life, transitioning from montane forest to bamboo thickets, then to heather and afro-alpine moorland, culminating in glacial zones atop the highest peaks like Mount Stanley. This botanical richness provides habitat for diverse fauna, though wildlife encounters can be more elusive than in savannah parks. Keep an eye out for forest elephants, chimpanzees, various monkey species, and a remarkable variety of colorful birds, including several Albertine Rift endemics.

The primary draw of Rwenzori is its challenging and rewarding trekking opportunities. Several trails, ranging from day hikes to multi-day expeditions reaching the glaciers, offer breathtaking vistas and an immersive experience in this unique environment. The trails wind through diverse vegetation zones, past cascading waterfalls and pristine lakes. Trekkers often encounter unique plant adaptations to the high altitude and moist conditions. The Rwenzoris offer a different kind of African adventure, one focused on the beauty of its montane ecosystems and the accomplishment of conquering its rugged terrain. The park’s remoteness and relatively low visitor numbers contribute to its pristine and wild character, offering a sense of true exploration.
