Our Impact

Become a volunteer at UP4S

UP4S – The Foundation Behind Bukoma Safaris

At the heart of Bukoma Safaris is UP4S, a community foundation established in 2003 with the aim of creating better opportunities for children and communities in Uganda through education and development. Based in Bukomansimbi, UP4S runs schools and community projects that give local children access to education, skills and opportunities for their future.
Through our connection with UP4S, we offer travellers the opportunity to experience Uganda in a more meaningful way: combining volunteering with adventure. Spend time contributing to a local community, meet the people behind the project, and discover Uganda's incredible wildlife, nature and culture through a safari.
Travel with purpose. Volunteer. Explore. Experience Uganda.

Volunteer Packages

Want to join our group trips? Here is what you can expect

Volunteer for a few days – get your hands dirty, meet the local community, spend time with the kids and experience Uganda from a completely different perspective. Warning: you might leave with 20 new little friends who refuse to let you go home.
Go gorilla trekking – one moment you’re hiking through the jungle wondering why you signed up for this, and the next you’re standing just metres away from a mountain gorilla. Worth every sweaty step.
Search for chimpanzees – head into the forest, follow the sounds of the jungle and keep your eyes open. You never quite know what you’ll find hiding in the trees!
Go on game drives – grab your camera and get ready for some serious wildlife spotting. Lions, elephants, giraffes, hippos, buffalo… and probably a few moments of “WAIT, DID YOU SEE THAT?!”
Cruise along the Nile – sit back, enjoy the scenery and watch the world go by as we cruise along one of the world’s most famous rivers. Keep an eye out for hippos and crocodiles — they were here first.
Explore Uganda beyond the tourist trail – waterfalls, forests, villages, incredible landscapes, local food, culture and plenty of unexpected moments along the way. Basically, your camera roll is going to need a holiday afterwards.
Make an actual impact – this isn’t just a trip where you tick places off a list. You’ll spend time volunteering, connecting with local communities and contributing to something bigger than your own adventure.
And, of course… expect chaos, laughter & new friendships – because travelling in a group means sharing the early mornings, the long drives, the “are we there yet?” moments, the dancing, the inside jokes and stories you’ll still be telling years later.
In short: volunteering + wildlife + jungle + adventure + impact + a whole lot of fun.
Small group, big adventure
Our trips have a minimum of 6 participants and a maximum of 12, creating a personal and social experience where you can connect with fellow travellers while still having plenty of space to enjoy the adventure.
Whether you’re travelling solo or with a friend, come along and volunteer, explore, connect and experience Uganda together.

Many volunteer opportunities

Volunteer work involves helping at primary school, mainly teaching English to baby class and top class. Mostly, you will assist during classes and supervise the kids during their breaks. Our school also has football teams, so it’s possible that you might help with that if you're interested in sports. It really depends on what's happening at the time, where you're most needed, and your own interests.
If you have a particular educational background and a vision for how you could help the school or hotel, we’re open to that! Or you can help create content for social media, organize something creative, help with sports, gardening, etc. You don’t need any particular educational background to volunteer with us! We would love to hear your ideas and interests, and discuss the possibilities.

ABOUT VOLUNTEERING

Are you still studying?

You can also come while still studying, as we also offer school projects and internships. Some examples include: nurses, teachers, sports trainers, entertainment, community projects, agriculture, horticulture, and various other interests. Just let us know what the requirements are for school and we can try to make it fit. Email us or register via the registration form to discuss the options.

Your stay at Hotel Hollandia

You will be staying in our volunteer accommodation at Hotel Hollandia, located right above the schools on the same hill in Bukomansimbi. You will eat in our restaurant as well. You will have a private room and 3 warm meals a day.

Requirements

The age requirement is a minimum of 17 years old, with no maximum age! The most important factors are that you are mature, responsible, and can communicate in English. If you are below 17 but demonstrate maturity and your parents approve, we can make exceptions.

Costs of accommodation, meals, and more

As a volunteer, you will pay €30 a day if you stay for shorter than 30 days and €25 a day if you stay longer than 30 days; for accommodation, three meals a day (excluding drinks), room cleaning, laundry, etc. This fee is just to cover costs, so you will pay less compared to other guests since you’re volunteering. In addition, you will be responsible for your own plane ticket, vaccinations (Yellow Fever is mandatory), visa, and other activities.

How to get to Bukomansimbi?

You’re pickup and drop off will be arranged by us and is included in your volunteering package. If needed, we can also arrange a hotel on the first or last night in entebbe to ensure a smooth departure or arrival.

How long do you want to come?

You can decide when and for how long you want to come, as long as it is for at least two weeks. If you are only coming for a few weeks, it is important that you avoid the children’s holidays. The children are in school on the following dates:
2-2-2026 till 1-5-2026
25-5-2025 till 21-8-2026
14-9-2026 till 4-12-2026

New: your effort, at no cost – and full of impact

From now on, UP4S volunteers can choose:
pay for your stay, or bring in five child sponsors and stay for free.
Not only will you help children directly, you’ll also get the chance to win a free safari in Uganda.
