More about this Park

Mgahinga National Park, Uganda’s smallest national park at just 33.7 square kilometers, forms part of a larger transboundary conservation area encompassing Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. This interconnectedness is crucial for the survival of the endangered mountain gorillas and the vibrant golden monkeys that call these slopes home. The park’s topography is dominated by three extinct volcanoes – Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Muhabura – each contributing to the dramatic and varied scenery.

The dense bamboo forests at the lower elevations give way to sub-alpine vegetation and eventually Afro-montane forests higher up, creating diverse habitats that support a range of wildlife beyond the primates. Birdlife is abundant, with numerous Albertine Rift endemics making it a haven for keen birdwatchers. Exploring the park’s trails offers opportunities for challenging hikes with rewarding panoramic views across the Virunga chain.

A significant cultural element also permeates Mgahinga. The Batwa people, traditional forest dwellers, have a deep connection to these mountains. Guided walks often incorporate insights into their history, traditional practices, and the challenges they face in modern conservation efforts. Visiting the Garama Cave, a lava tube historically used by the Batwa, provides a tangible link to their past. The park’s intimate scale allows for a truly immersive experience, where the sounds of the forest and the possibility of encountering rare primates create lasting memories.
