On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you’ll be welcomed by your driver-guide, who will introduce you to the highlights of your upcoming gorilla trekking trip. From here, enjoy a scenic drive—about two and a half hours—to the town of Musanze near Volcanoes National Park. If time allows, you may take a short tour of Kigali, possibly including a visit to the Genocide Memorial. Upon reaching Musanze, check in and settle in for the night.
After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters in Kinigi for registration and a briefing from the ranger team. The trek begins shortly afterward, with guides leading you through forested slopes in search of one of the park’s habituated gorilla families. The hike may vary in length, depending on the gorillas’ location, but the reward is the chance to spend an hour quietly observing them in their natural environment. Return to your lodge in the afternoon to rest and enjoy the evening.
This morning, learn more about the life and legacy of Dian Fossey, the researcher and conservationist whose work helped bring global attention to mountain gorillas. A visit to the museum or former research center offers context into her efforts and the ongoing conservation work in the region. You’ll have free time in the afternoon to relax or explore at your own pace before dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, stop by a nearby village or community project, where you’ll gain insight into daily life and local traditions in rural Rwanda. Then begin the return drive to Kigali. Time permitting, you’ll have a chance to browse markets for souvenirs or handmade crafts. After a final lunch, your guide will drop you off at the airport or your preferred location in Kigali, bringing your trip to a close.
