More about this Park

Volcanoes National Park, established in 1925, is a crucial 160 sq km conservation area bordering Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its five dormant volcanoes – Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo – define the dramatic skyline and contribute to the park’s diverse ecosystems. These range from bamboo forests and open grasslands to swamps and heath. The park’s elevation, varying between 2,400m and 4,507m, creates unique habitats supporting a wealth of flora and fauna.

The primary draw is undoubtedly the mountain gorilla population, habituated for research and tourism. Trekking through the dense undergrowth to spend time observing these gentle giants in their family groups is a deeply moving and often transformative experience. Permits are essential and contribute directly to conservation efforts.

Beyond gorillas, the park is home to the playful golden monkey, another endangered primate found only in the Virunga Massif. Guided treks offer opportunities to observe their lively antics. Birdwatchers will be thrilled by the over 200 recorded species, including numerous Albertine Rift endemics.

The park also holds cultural significance, with opportunities to learn about the local communities and their relationship with the forest. Hikes to the crater lake on Mount Bisoke or explorations of the Karisoke Research Center (founded by Dian Fossey) offer further insights into the region’s natural and scientific importance. The dramatic volcanic scenery itself provides a stunning backdrop for all activities within the park.
